Clear skies, calm winds, campers and my wide-angle lens is back. I received my Canon RF 15-35mm lens back that I damaged in August. Find out how my lens was damaged here.

When I arrived at the lake I knew the spot I wanted to setup at. A couple people were at the spot when I arrived so I started a little farther north on the lake. Shortly after, the couple departed and I moved in and setup.

There were very few people around the lake making the evening even more relaxing. The best part was no one on the water which allowed the water to remain still. Below, you will find a short aerial drone video and shoreline photos of the moon and Milky Way.

Drone Video and Photos

Calm winds called for an opportunity to break out my DJI Mavic Air 2 drone for some aerial photos. I was able to fly my drone and snap some photos from above as well as with my camera. The video and photos below were taken just before sunset with my drone.

Moonset Over the Sierras

The moon provided an additional layer of natural light after sunset. Shooting the Milky Way is not ideal during bright moons. I snapped a few photos of the moon just before setting over the Eastern Sierras. The foreground lighting in this image was made with the Lume Cube Panel Mini. The moon is seen on top of the mountain reflecting on the still water of the lake.

Milky Way Photos Over the Eastern Sierras

The photos below are all taken of the Milky Way over the mountains and lake about an hour after moonset.

Conclusion

This was my first time shooting the Milky Way with my lens since the accidental drop resulting in damaging the lens in August. I was pleased with the repair with my accidental insurance plan. The lens looks new and takes amazing photos as it did before.

  1. Very soothing video and lovely Milky Way photos. I especially love how the evening shadows were creeping up onto the mountains, and how low you flew the drone over the tall grass.

It was a lot of fun flying around the lake. I always enjoy evening shadows, they add another layer to photos which is why I enjoy shooting around sunrise or sunset the most.
